Before the pandemic hit, Malaysia has enjoyed growth in the retail and luxury sector due to rising affluence. The value of retail sales was forecasted to grow by 6% per annum between 2019 and 2022 due to the strong demand especially in categories such as jewellery and fashion.
However, Covid-19 is a salient reason why the growth of this sector is currently stymied. Because of the declaration of a Movement Control Order (MCO) to manage the effects of the pandemic, residents are now limited to a travel radius of 10km from their residential home. Non-essential stores were forced to close, impacting retail and luxury sales.

As a result, skills that relate to online marketing, e-commerce, and Search engine optimisation skills that can drive up web traffic for brands are high in demand currently.
